Lawful Intercept & Data Retention
Lawful intercept (Li) is the legally sanctioned access to private communications, such as phone calls or internet traffic, by law enforcement and intelligence agencies. This access is governed by laws and regulations (The Telecommunications Act in Australia), ensuring that Li is carried out in a controlled and legal manner.
The purpose of lawful intercept is to combat crime, terrorism, and other illicit activities by allowing authorities to monitor communications of suspects.
Data Retention – DR
Data retention – refers to the practice of storing data for a specified period to meet regulatory, legal, or business requirements. In the context of telecommunications and internet services, data retention typically involves the storage of metadata related to communications (such as call logs, email headers, and IP addresses) rather than the content of the communications themselves.
